hey guys,
i hope it's ok if i film/take photos of our taiko practice on sunday for a media production class project. it actually won't be used in the final film itself... but i need temporary footage i can use by next monday. let me explain.

our assignment is to make a short film around the theme of an "open city" illustrating the "coexistence and cross-fertilization of diverse social groups from which new cultures emerge." i've decided to focus my film on drumming circles around san diego, because from what i can tell from researching online, there's quite a lot of them. i thought it would be interesting to showcase different types of drumming like egyptian, djembe african, brazilian, korean? (can't find info online) and taiko drumming, as well as community family drumming circles and full moon drumming circles, if i have time and the resources.

and while i don't think asayake will quite fit into the theme of "open city," our homework for this week is to have some sort of film footage we can work with in class on monday. and the thing is, i haven't heard back from the drum circles i contacted, and even if they did reply, i don't think i'll have time to visit and film until after our concert. SO i want to film asayake for just a bit on sunday to make it look like i started on my project. yeahhh.
let me know in advance if there is a problem or if you don't want to be filmed. (don't worry kelli, i won't let this get in the way of our rehearsal).

also, if anyone is interested in checking these drumming circles out with me when i actually do go out and film (oooh and possibly carry the fishpole mike around for me -you know, like the ones pros use) let me know!! i'll probably go the week after concert.

here's the list of drumming circles around san diego.

I'll go with you, Ayano! I've always wanted to go to a drumming circle but never had the time to.

I am waiting on a reply from the worldbeat center, but here's my proposed filming schedule:

Tomorrow, Tuesday, 4/49: Afro-Cuban Percussion 6-7pm
Sunday, 5/4: Drumming circle, Balboa Park outdoors, if it is happening
Next Monday 5/5: Egyptian Drumming 6-7pm and SDTaiko 8-9pm
Next Wednesday 5/7: Beginning African Djembe Drumming 6-7pm and Super Sonic Samba School

even though my professor is pretty laid back, i could sense that he wasn't too happy with the clips of our taiko practice i brought into class today :P he said i need to show him progress reports on my film next monday, so i NEED to get actual film footage during this week. UGH such bad timing for a time consuming project... T_T

but yeah, i will have to go to Balboa Park to film tomorrow night if i can get permission to do so. i know most of you are also busy, but just letting you know. get back to me if you want to tag along.

Unfortunately, I have class tomorrow around that time so I can't come with you, but I think I can make next Wednesday.

i love the worldbeat center <3

i drove down to balboa park today tired and ill-prepared, realizing when i got to the wbc that i forgot to bring my mini-dv tape and stressed over the fact i wasn't able to contact the class instructor beforehand.

but the people there were super friendly and super nice, gave me one of their mini-dv tapes, took time aside for me to do an interview, and now i have plenty of footage of afro-cuban percussion, which was frikkin awesome, btw.

of course taiko is number one in my heart, but still, it's refreshing listening to different kinds of drumming and it reminds me how much i just love the energy and beat of the drum.

i'll be going back to film an outdoor drumming circle on sunday (may have to be late to practice) and on monday night.
